Frequently Asked Questions

What is a movement educator?

ME! (Get it, Movement Educator…) Jokes aside, Movement Educator is a title I created to describe what I do. I teach you how to move well, so you can enjoy the things you like to do. I use modalities such as Pilates, yoga, rehabilitation exercises and protocols that I have learned from my extensive trainings, graduate studies in kinesiology and exercise physiology and time working with other movement professionals in both exercise and rehab settings. These techniques can be applied to those suffering from chronic pain, to athletes looking for a cross training modality to folks who simply want to feel better in their body and desire a consistent teacher/coach to help them along the way. Educating you empowers you to take good care both on the mat and off.

Do I need a reformer if I want to do Pilates at home?

No, not at all! I do teach some long standing clients who have purchased Reformers and other equipment but it's not necessary. We can get a lot done (strengthening, stretching, balance, pain reduction) with mat exercises and simple, inexpensive props. If you are interested in using the Reformer and live in the Ventura County area, consider booking an in person session.

What equipment do I need at home to do zoom sessions?

You simply need a mat and a quiet space to roll it out. A good internet connection and webcam are fundamental, so be sure you take that into consideration when choosing your location and device. Although not necessary, any other props you have can greatly enhance your workout. I am happy to incorporate resistance bands, stability balls, small free weights (2-3lbs), and foam rollers if you have them or are interested in acquiring these low cost items. If you are taking yoga with me, purchasing a set of blocks and a yoga strap are great additions to your practice.

What equipment do you have available for in person sessions?

I own a Classical Pilates Reformer, a Pilates Exo Chair (inspired by the original Wunda chair)  and smaller props such as the Pilates Ring, foam rollers, small weights, resistance bands, stability balls and yoga blocks.

What if I have never done Pilates/Yoga/personal training before.  Do you take beginners?

Yes! I am very comfortable teaching beginners and have been told I am very encouraging. :-) I'd be honored to start you on your exercise journey!

I have just been diagnosed with osteoporosis.  Are you qualified to develop a safe exercise program for me?

Yes. For nearly ten years I have been faculty for Buff Bones®, a medically endorsed osteoporosis safe exercise program.  I have taught students and teachers all around the globe safe exercise techniques that are also challenging, innovative and effective.  If you are interested in taking a Buff Bones® mat class, check my online schedule.

Can you make my back pain go away?

While I can't guarantee your back pain will go away, I do have an excellent track record of (for?) helping clients lessen and reduce pain by improving posture and core strength, teaching proper body mechanics for daily activities and empowering individuals with simple exercise protocols you can do with me in session and on your own.  These exercises develop strength, improve flexibility and balance, and help with physical endurance for daily tasks.

I have an autoimmune condition that does not allow me to do taxing exercise because it tires me out and compromises my energy for my simple daily tasks.  Is there anything you can teach me to feel better?

Yes! My first certification in 2005 was in Therapeutic (Restorative) Yoga.  It combines gentle yoga, breathwork, guided meditation and the use of props to support the body in deeply relaxing postures. The practice is meant to calm the CNS (Central Nervous System) and increase our Parasympathetic or “rest and digest” response.  It is the perfect practice for those who need a calmer, gentler practice.

I’m an athlete and I have heard that both yoga and Pilates can help me cross train and prevent injury. Can you help me with this?

Absolutely. I have worked with dancers, cyclists, golfers, tennis players, gymnasts, and runners. Cross training is a great idea and not only helps with injury prevention but also greater body awareness and dedicated time to spend on breathwork.  I would also suggest my Move with Me mat class. You can sign up here.

I would like to lose 30 pounds, have six pack abs and sweat profusely during my workout. Would your style of teaching be a good fit for me?

No, but I definitely appreciate the question!  I am more than happy to give you a challenging workout that will give you some “good” soreness and increase muscle tone, strength and physical endurance but I do not teach cardiovascular exercise and nutrition (needed for weight loss) nor will I sacrifice safe form and technique just to get you to sweat.  Perhaps a running club, an advanced group Reformer class at a local studio or a HIIT class would be more inline with your goals.

What if I have to cancel my session?

As an appointment based business with limited hours, session times are at a premium.  Please allow 24 hours for cancellation to avoid being charged in full for your session.  With this advanced notice, I may be able to offer you a different time slot if you are unable to make our previously scheduled session time. That being said, if you are experiencing any Covid related symptoms sessions must be canceled and a cancellation fee will be waived.

What are your Covid Protocols?

If you are feeling unwell have been exposed to someone with Covid 19 please cancel your session. If you have been exposed to someone with Covid but have no symptoms please test before your session. The studio space is airy and well ventilated and Hepa filtration will be employed. Masks are up to the discretion of the client and instructor. If you would prefer me to wear a mask during our time together I am more than happy to. Let’s help each other live well!
