Let’s face it. The breath is often forgotten. Yet correct breathing is extremely important in helping us feel our best throughout the day. Pilates uses full diaphragmatic breathing which emphasizes breathing into your ribcage (rather than your upper chest) and pulling in abdominals while you exhale (working your core!) This method of breathing facilitates fresh oxygen to the blood, increases circulation, while calming the body and mind. So if you are feeling stressed and need a quick remedy take a minute and breathe!
2. Strong Core = Strong Back
Perhaps my favorite aspect of Pilates is this “two for one” combo. I love that the esthetic goal of slimmer waist and tight tummy corresponds perfectly with strengthening the back. Who wants to fit better in their jeans – skinny, boot-cut or otherwise? The same people who want to live back-pain free. Eighty percent of Americans suffer from chronic back pain. Pilates safely works the core while giving people relief from past injuries and spine conditions.
3. Long, lean muscles
Looking good is often our top priority. We want to look toned and feel strong. Pilates exercises strengthens the muscles through isometric and isotonic contractions. These two types of contraction promote strength and length in the muscle. The more muscle and less fat your body has, the more calories are burned. Thus, Pilates is a great compliment to achieving weight loss goals while simultaneously increasing bone density and flexibility.
4. Movement is Medicine
We feel our best when our muscles and joints are limber and flexible. I have the honor to work with people of varying abilities, ages and limitations and nothing makes me happier than to see the look of accomplishment after my client succeeds at one of the more challenging exercises. How often have I heard a client say “I feel taller after my session!” Yes! As my client walks out looking fantastic with his/her head held high I know they feel confident and strong in their body.
